Team H&R Block dominates Open Men's field at Alberta Provincial Road Championships – Kangarloo new Provincial Champion!
The 2008 Alberta Provincial Road Race Championships were held on Saturday, August 30th in the Rocky Mountain Foothills north-west of Cochrane.
The race consisted of full and half-loops on undulating terrain. The Open Men's race featured approximately 30 starters, and included heavy-hitters Tim Heemskerk (United Cycle), Jon Wood (ERTC/Revolution Cycle), Shawn Bunnin (bicisport) and several members of the H&R Block Team. Once the race was underway, the H&R strategy was clear – send riders up the road in hopes of tiring out the opposition by making them chase. The early break of significance included H&R's Jeff Bolstad and Gideon Krishtalka, joined by Steve Mundy of ERTC/Revolution Cycle. The break, however, never gained more than one minute and was re-absorbed by the peloton, despite the successful bridge by H&R riders Chris DeVries and Cyrus Kangarloo. At approximately the 80 km point of the race, H&R's Kangarloo struck out on his own from the peloton, and was not to be seen again by the pack. Such was the intensity of his solo effort Kangarloo nearly hit the ditch once or twice. In the end, his winning margin exceeded 3 minutes.
The chase group, meanwhile, was whittled down to about 6 riders. H&R's Chris McNeil attacked late in the race with Cody Canning (ERTC/Revolution), with McNeil taking the silver and Canning the bronze. Chris DeVries came in 4th place.
